I am not even going to lie to you guys, but I was not a fan of Black History Month in school. I know that may sound crazy, but it was daunting to learn about the same five Black people in history. I remember zoning out during history lessons in February often. I always knew there was more to Black history than what was told to me in schools.
I’ll save the extensive lesson on Black History Month because if you don’t know what it is, then shame on the educational system. However, I will explain why the African American community passionately acknowledges the month even though it’s the shortest month of the year. It’s the time of year when we are Blackity-Black-Black. Black History Month fills the African American community with so much pride it’s unexplainable. When the world tries to condense and eliminate you for the other 337 days of the year, it’s nice to be recognized internationally.
So, for Black History Month 2021. I am asking my readers to shed light on the unsung heroes in African American history. Do you have knowledge of anyone that you feel should be highlighted? If so, comment below, or email me. I will highlight the selected unsung heroes every Monday for Museum Monday’s. I’ll also give a shout out to those who participated in this call to action.
